Customer Reviews: The cartoons clearly demonstrate some of the differences between Chinese and western cultures June 6, 2010 Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States(cashbacher@yahoo.com)) This collection of cartoons depicting Chinese folklore clearly demonstrates many of the differences between Chinese and western culture. The short stories expressed in a single cartoon and small caption express incidents from ancient Chinese society, in most cases the characters are from the upper levels of society. Western readers will find the content understated as the cartoons lack the more assertive posture typical of cartoonists in western societies.
The captions of all the cartoons are written in both English and Chinese, which would allow this book to be used in advanced classes of the Chinese language. The content and short nature of the stories would make them valuable as study material for courses in ancient and modern Chinese culture and society. While the scenes are from ancient China, Cong created them in the twentieth century.
